Frequently Asked Questions

  • A neuropsychological assessment typically includes several components:

    1. Clinical Interview - a detailed discussion about your concerns, background, medical history, mood, and day-to-day functioning. With your consent, information from family members or carers can also be helpful.

    2. Cognitive testing - you will complete a range of standardised tasks that assess:

    • Memory

    • Attention

    • Processing speed

    • Language

    • Visuospatial skills

    • Executive functioning (planning, flexibility, problem-solving)

    • Social/behavioural functioning

    3. Scoring, interpretation, and report writing - after the appointment, your results are carefully scored and interpreted in the context of your history, age, education, and background. This is quite a lot of work that happens behind the scenes. This information is integrated into a detailed written report with:

    • A summary of findings

    • Identified strengths and areas of difficulty

    • Clinical impressions or diagnoses (where appropriate, note diagnoses are not guaranteed)

    • Practical recommendations for treatment, support, or further investigations

    4. Feedback Session - a complimentary feedback session (up to 50 minutes) is offered about two weeks later to explain the results in clear, everyday language. This is an opportunity to:

    • Discuss what the findings mean for you

    • Ask questions

    • Review recommendations and next steps

  • Assessments vary in length depending on the referral question, but range from 2 to 4 hours inclusive of breaks. Once your face to face appointment is complete, several hours of work occurs behind the scenes, including test scoring, interpretation, and report writing.

  • A referral from your doctor is recommended but not required. Your doctor can help you decide whether a neuropsychological assessment would be helpful.

  • Yes. A support person may attend parts of the appointment where appropriate.

  • Fees vary depending on the complexity and type of assessment required. Please contact us to obtain a quote.

  • Unfortunately Medicare does not provide rebates for neuropsychological assessments.

Some assessments may be partially covered by private health insurers, WorkCover, DVA, or covered under the NDIS.

    • Referral letters (if applicable)

    • Relevant medical reports or scans if available

    • Glasses/hearing aids if you use them

    • A list of medications

    • Feel free to bring snacks and drinks
